My life these days
Serve lunch from the red cooler. Try to make it even for everybody. Tell the kids not to run for seconds. Wait outside the hogar for the kids to pull their clothes off the line. Sit. Wait. Bask in the sun and move to the shade when that gets too warm. Talk to the tias. Help wash clothes. Try to imitate their motions since I’m still not very good at this. Say things like: Why did you hit her? Why did you say that? Play some cards. Listen to the radio. Pick out nits and lice. Pull their hair into pigtales. Supervise the macheting of the grass. Tell them when they’ve macheted enough. Machete a bit myself. Maybe sweep out the gutters leading from the hogars’ drains. Or perhaps sweep and mop the church. Play more cards. Move the games outside while the kids do chores inside. Look for the kids who disappear when it’s chore time. Check the chores. Play memory. Listen to their bickering. Say things like: If you can’t say anything nice… and make them finish the sentence. Bring the coolers from the kitchen. Sit and wait for someone to bring a serving spoon. Ask nicely for said serving spoon. Watch as the line for food grows but tell them I can’t serve with my hands. Serve dinner. Sit and eat with the kids. Pull out a book. Listen to Sonia read. Listen to Sonia read 1 sentence a minute because she is a very P-o-o-r r-e-a-d-e-r. Play king of the jungle. Have a dance party. Do a puzzle. Help the tias with paperwork. Hand out medicine. Tell the kids to brush their teeth, put on pajamas, get into bed. Tell them again because their ears tend to shut off when asked to do something. Read a story. Or maybe make one up… starring them. Ask them to please be quiet if they really want the story. Probably ask again. Finish the story. Wish them sweet dreams. Do it again tomorrow.
